Omagh homes and their roofs
Omagh has a real mix of housing. Around the town centre and older roads you will find terraces and older detached houses, often with slate or older concrete tiles. Further out there are estates of semi-detached and detached homes built over the past few decades, and around the edges of town a lot of individual bungalows and dormer houses on larger sites. Those bungalows and dormers often have big, visible roof slopes, so moss on them is easy to spot from the road.
Older slate and concrete tiles are exactly why we use the air-pole system as our main method. There is no need to walk on fragile tiles to clear moss from them.
Why moss grows so well here
Omagh sits where the Camowen and Drumragh rivers meet to form the Strule, with the Sperrins rising to the north-east. The town gets a lot of rain and plenty of damp, mild days, which is ideal for moss and lichen. Houses on the edge of town, close to fields, hedges and mature trees, collect even more spores and leaf litter. North-facing slopes can stay damp for much of the winter, which is why one side of a roof is often far worse than the other.
