Why gutters block
Valley gutters, where two roof slopes meet, and the short runs above porches and bay windows are particularly prone to blocking, because debris collects there from more than one direction. Downpipe outlets can also clog with a plug of silt even when the rest of the gutter looks clear, which is why we check the outlets as part of every clean.
Most blocked gutters we see are caused by moss washing off the roof during heavy rain, combined with leaves from nearby trees. Over time this breaks down into a thick, wet silt that sits in the bottom of the gutter and around the outlet into the downpipe. Plants and even small trees can start growing in it. Houses with large roof slopes or a lot of tree cover tend to need clearing more often.
Signs your gutters need attention
You do not need to climb a ladder to spot a problem. The usual signs are visible from the ground.

What our gutter clean includes
We remove the debris from the gutter run, clear around the outlets and check that water can get into the downpipes. Debris is bagged and taken away or left where you would like it for composting. If we notice anything worth knowing about, such as a leaking joint or a bracket that has come loose, we will point it out so you can decide what to do; we will not carry out repairs you have not agreed to.
Gutters and roof cleaning go together
Whenever we clean a roof, moss inevitably ends up in the gutters, so clearing them is part of tidying up after a roof clean. If your roof is heavily mossed, cleaning the gutters on their own will only help for a while, because more moss will wash down in the next downpour. In that case it is usually better value to have the roof cleaned and the gutters cleared in the same visit.
How often should gutters be cleared?
For many homes, an annual check is sensible, often after autumn leaf fall. Houses near trees may need it more often, while a house with a recently cleaned roof and little tree cover may need it less.
