How air-pole roof cleaning works
Moss grows in mats that sit on top of and between the tiles. The air pole works underneath the edge of those mats and pushes them off the roof surface. Because the force is air rather than a person's weight, nobody needs to walk across the tiles, which matters on older concrete tiles and on slate where a misplaced foot can crack or dislodge a piece.
The loosened moss falls to the ground or into the gutter. Once the roof surface is clear we gather the debris, clear what has dropped into the gutters and tidy the ground around the house before we leave.
Being honest about water and pressure
Air is our main method for roofs, but we don't pretend it is the only tool we ever use. On some jobs a softwash treatment or a careful pressure wash of a particular area is the right answer, for example on heavily stained ridge tiles, on a flat surface, or on the driveway and paths after the roof has been done. Where we think water or pressure is needed we will say so on your written quote and explain why, so there are no surprises on the day.
Biocide treatment
Removing visible moss is only half the job. Spores and root fragments stay in the surface of the tile, and in our damp climate they start growing again quickly. If you would like it, we finish with a biocide treatment that is applied to the cleaned roof and keeps working on the remaining growth over the following months. How long a roof stays clean depends on tree cover, which way the roof faces and how exposed it is, so we will talk you through what to expect for your house.
Why it is worth cleaning a roof
A thick layer of moss holds water against the tiles like a sponge. Over the winter that water can freeze and expand, and moss that washes off in heavy rain often ends up blocking gutters and downpipes, which can lead to overflowing water running down the walls. A clean roof also simply makes the whole house look looked-after, which is why homeowners often book a roof clean before selling or after finishing other work on the property.

What to expect when you book
Send us a few photos of your roof or ask us to call out and have a look. We will give you a free written quote that sets out what we plan to do, whether a biocide treatment is included and whether any part of the job needs water or pressure. On the day we arrive in a sign-written van, protect the area around the house where debris will land, carry out the clean and tidy up afterwards. Most customers do not need to be at home while we work, although you are welcome to be.
